American Distance Project Moves Forward After Successful Inaugural Year

(Colorado Springs, CO) - With the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials passed, the American Distance Project reflects on its inaugural year and looks to the future. Established in Colorado Springs in the summer of 2011, founders Renato Canova and Scott Simmons initially embarked on a project to coach willing American distance runners to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. After having nine athletes meet the Trials standard and after having impressive results at the Trials, including the Olympic A Standard debuts of Wendy Thomas (adidas/BRC) and Alisha Williams (adidas/BRC), the American Distance Project (ADP) was established as a permanent project and sought non-profit status. 

After the marathon trials, the ADP saw growth in its roster and saw continued success on both the track and on the roads. Individual accomplishments for the first year of the ADP's operations in Colorado Springs include:

Joseph Chirlee's (US Army) 10k Olympic A standard of 27:43.96
Alisha Williams' 5th and 9th place finishes in the Olympic Trials 10k and 5k, respectively
Wendy Thomas' and Williams' 12th- and 14th-place finishes at the US Olympic Trials Marathon with Olympic A standards (2:34:25 and 2:35:09)
- Chirlee's US 25k National Championship title
- Williams' and Thomas' selection to Team USA for the Chiba Ekiden Relay in Japan
- Williams' runner-up finish at the US Road Mile Championships
- Williams' selection to Team USA for the BUPA Great Edinburgh XC
Kenny Foster's (US Army) 10k debut with a Penn Relays win
- Thirteen top 10 US Championship finishes: Williams, 6th-US20k; Chris Barnicle, 7th-US10M; Williams, 6th-US10k; Thomas, 7th-US10k; Williams, 4th-USClubXC; Chirlee, 5th-US15k; Williams, 6th-US15k; Chirlee, 1st-US25k; Williams, 2nd-USMile; Edwin Sang,7th-USMile; Thomas, 7th-US1/2; Williams, 5th-USOT10k; Williams, 9th-USOT5k
